Clayface Reboot 'animated' by MatthewRHumphreys Clayface Reboot 'animated' by MatthewRHumphreys
So I just had a boatload of fun with this one. I didn't quite pull off his transition effect like I wanted, but I'll keep trying to figure that one out.

Anyhow, I dug the Batman : The Animated Series version of Clayface above all others. He combines several elements of various clayfaces through the comics and so I intend to do the same.

Matt Hagen was a washed up actor who's downfall was his remarkably handsome face. He was a shakespearean level actor but his looks and climb to fame left him in usually vapid roles. Denied the chance to show his true skill, Matt shunned the spotlight quickly finding it was a fickle light to start with.

He shortly wasn't able to find even the smallest of roles. A man named Roland Daggett, an industrialist of some reputation, had long before seen Hagen on stage. When he'd heard that Matt was out of the business he did his best to make sure he was blackballed, ensuring the downtrodden actor's desperation.

Having seen Hagen's true acting abilities, Daggett's twisted criminal mind saw the perfect con man with whom he'd always wanted to run with. He pushed Hagen so far down into the gutter that Hagen was all too eager to take any job he could get.

This job was conning investors in a highly complicated, but sellable scheme. Daggett's main business was in pharmaceuticals and business was weakened by previous shady dealings Daggett had been accused of. Using Hagen's face and acting skills he could get anyone to believe anything. Money once again began rolling in.

Things went smoothly for a short time, but Hagen wasn't an evil man. He wanted out soon enough, and Daggett was the type of man who chooses when things end on his own terms.

Hagen was taken to the pharmaceutical factory where he was subjected to all sorts of chemical tortures. Rather than killing him though, Hagen was subjected to a worse fate. He suffered a cellular realignment that turned him into a grotesque mass of malleable flesh. He fled to the only place he felt he could hide. An abandoned theater where he now roams as a wailing figure of despair.

Clayface has long since broken into madness. He found that with his misshapen form he could actually turn into anything or anyone...but for some joke of the universe, he could no longer take on his own face. A face he hated for so long because of the trouble it brought him, was all he wanted. So he wears the sad face of the theater...that is until you touch on his fury. Then the masks change...

I always felt Clayface started off awesome in Batman The Animated Series, but as he showed up in later iterations of the Bat-verse he became just some raging monster. I wanted to make him sympathetic but a bit sad, but incredibly dangerous at the same time.

That said, I chose to use masks formed of his clay as a continuation of the theme of this series which is identities and the differences between the person you are, once were and are going to be.

is this like a reference to No Face from Spirited Away?

I thought the same

I still love this one, especially the 'sad' version. The way his body takes on the consistency of a dark cloak, I almost expect him to break into an opera song.

*Rubs his back* 'wispering' its ok, its ok, I know the feeling of being alone, I always felt alone ever since my mom died and I startted focusing on cartoons to remove the greif *Hugs him close* if you come with me, and join the hyna squad, you wont be alone any more.

*Mask changes to his dark side form* butt what will they say? will they be like the rest?

*Hugs him tighter* no, they learned to not to judge a person, and so do I, I care for you like a mother to her child, I dont want you to be scared and alone no more.

*Changes to his lighter mask and hugs me Back* ok then, I will come
*We break the hug, and walk out of the theater together holding hands, I squeeze my hand hard to assure I will never let go, and he squeezes it back to ashure I am there....

-and that is what will happen if you have me face him, I'm a over caring person, thats who I am

T^T Poor baby, I just wanna hug him now and tell him it's okay.

You know I can see this clayface being a really tragic villain. I can see when Batgirl first hears about him, she'll probably think he's one of those comic book type mindless monster being controlled. Then she meets him she'll realise that indeed he is a tragic monster and even though he has a dark side (that she accidentally triggers). He is just really mad and extremely lonely. Clayface will probably be the first villain she counters that she will pity and try to make his life a bit less miserable. I can see her being friendly to him and visiting him, after her first encounter, Listening to his woes, applauding him after an act or music piece (I'd like to think there is a piano in the theater that he plays from time to time) , Getting drama advice from him. I can see her being his only true friend. Even though from time to time she will activate his rage and he will attack her. She will always come back though, because that's what friends do.

Sidenote: I also think the theatre he lives in would be owned by Bruce Wayne. So there would be no danger of Clayface's home being torn down.

The part where Clayface's tragedy face in front of Batgirl's face reminds me of Spirited Away.

The masks remind me of Hexadecimal from Reboot.

The Batman TAS iterations of Bat's villains were definitely some of the best if not the best in many cases. Especially Clayface, Mary Dahl "Baby doll", and The Vetriloquist. My favorite was how they worked Scarecrow.

BTW I wonder why none of the newer versions ever have The Mad Hatter in them.

That is a really clever idea using those dramatic masks for the face. Especially that little doodle of his face in the top right corner. Quite brilliant.

WOW, the mask is a clever idea. :-)

Do you mind if I borrow elements from your clayface design into mine?

Well put, I have alot of respect for your clear vies of the character, how he began well then devolved later in the series. I love what you've done in this piece, I'd very much like to see this character in action.

This is quite possibly the best Clayface redesign I've ever seen.

well looking at this reminds me of Clayface and what was and what could have been for the big guy. what each side seems to me is like a split personality that sort of reminds me of Two-Face.

the sad one kinda reminds me of menos grande from bleach. nice work tho!

I get Sad Clayface's body looking like a cloak, but why does he change from grey to brown when he gets angry?
LeaveLiesToTheLiars Featured By Owner Dec 8, 2011
The entire concept for this show is so brilliant! And if there is anything to have me 100 % convinced of the fact that you'd be insane not to fall in love with such an idea-pitch it's this.
You have such a brilliant concept on all of the Bat characters!

I'm thoroughly sad that this is not something on air.

This version reminds me of No Face from Spirited Away.
Diamondheart96 Featured By Owner Nov 23, 2011
I love this take on the character. I really like the mask thing. He's more of a misunderstood beast than a raging monster.
firegrass Featured By Owner Nov 22, 2011
Adding a bit of drama always makes villains shine out just that bit more. I see Phantom of the Opera is already mentioned, but it's a brilliant reference to the play. Also, cute tween Batgirl.
whatsit2ya Featured By Owner Nov 19, 2011
I love the "Phantom of the Opera" approach to this character. You made an otherwise good character (a great one in TAS) an amazing character. Good job on this, and all the other designs for this reboot. Are you going to do any more?
Neesboy Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2011
Yes. This meets my full approval. Why? Because tragic theater masks make everything better, naturally! I love that you brought in the theatrical aspect of him more. X)
randomsketchfactory Featured By Owner Nov 17, 2011
I wish you could really get this out there as an animated series, or even just a comic. Your ideas for a re-vamp are brillant and the fact that you're working in the Bat-verse without the Bat is an interesting point of view, one that was covered in Gotham Girls, but not fleshed out the way you have.
Aburameclanhead Featured By Owner Nov 16, 2011  Student Writer
I love this, you've really done clayface justice!
cat-gray-and-me78 Featured By Owner Nov 14, 2011  Student General Artist
The despair clayface has a such an awesome design, I know it's supposed to be clay, but it has the look of wispy smoke that matches the solemn and sober attitude. If this project ever came to life, I think that would be very beautifully animated.
catfitemike Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2011  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I agree, the original BM:TAS version was my favorite.. your version is even better! Great Job! Nice touch on the Drama/Comedy theatrical mask and the mad look when merged into one.. Matt Hagen is the one true Clayface.. :) The series gave each one of the rogue gallery their 5 minutes of fame and are now legend.. they await your re-imagined versions as much as I do, Great Job! :)
ACdraw Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2011  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
And holy crap! I didn't even notice that the "transition" between his "sad" and "angry" faces in the top right corner creates a more DCAU-esque face between them. That's awesome.

You have done so many of these it's led me to almost belive you are going through with this whole thing. The designs, all of them, are so well though out and beautifully done, and the style is amazing! I wish this was a show actually going up on air. I would pay to see it.
